Frequently Asked Questions
Freediving
Freediving is a great activity that just about everyone can enjoy. It is not hard to learn, but just like other sports, it requires practice, focus, and training to become good at it. As long as you have the interest, and have no medical conditions that put you at risk from freediving, freediving is for you!
Freediving is one of the most beautiful ways to explore the ocean. But since it is done on breath hold, it can be dangerous if you don’t follow the safety guidelines, just like driving a car and not following the road rules. During the Discover Freediving course, your instructor will provide the necessary safety for you. During the certification courses, you will learn safety concepts and how to provide safety for other freedivers. It is important to stay safe by following these guidelines whenever you freedive.
Ideally, yes. You don’t have to be an expert swimmer, but you should be able to keep yourself afloat and be relatively comfortable in the water, for safety reasons. If you would like to take some swimming lessons before your freediving course, we can introduce you to a swimming teacher who is also a freediver.
The Molchanovs system was set up by some of the world's best freedivers. Their course content is the most comprehensive of all the systems, and is constantly reviewed and updated. For example, there is emphasis on learning different relaxation techniques throughout all the levels, and the no-fins technique is taught right from Lap 1, which no other system has. The requirements to become a Molchanovs instructor are also the most rigorous, so you can be sure your instructor knows what they are doing. After receiving a Molchanovs certification, you will be part of a global community of freedivers and have access to free training plans to progress further in freediving.
We have 4 courses that you can start off with – Discover Freediving (Pool), Discover Depth, Beginner’s Pool Course (Molchanovs Lap 1 certification) or Introduction to Freediving Course (Molchanovs Wave 1 certification).
The Discover Freediving (Pool) course is the most basic learn-to-freedive course we have. If you just want to try freediving in a pool setting and see if you like it, this is the course to take.
The Discover Depth is similar to Discover Freediving (Pool) in that it you learn the very basics, but is set in open water. There is no certification offered for the Discover Freediving (pool) or Discover Depth course.
If you want to have a more complete picture of freediving from the start, learn the physics & physiology behind it, as well as rescue techniques, you can start from either the Molchanovs Lap 1 or Molchanovs Wave 1 course. Both are certification courses which cover the same theory and pool components. The Wave 1 has an additional day where you get to try freediving at depth.
If you know that you want to learn freediving for sure, are very comfortable in water and are looking for the complete freediving experience, start with the Wave 1 course.
If you have a scuba diving license and are very comfortable in water, we recommend going straight for the Introduction to Freediving Course.
In order to join our training sessions, we require you to have taken a freediving course before (at least the Discover Freediving course). This is because we don't teach the basic breath hold methods during training, but focus on improving on freediving techniques, and also for safety reasons.
